Sampras topples McEnroe
Pete Sampras started his campaign at the BlackRock Masters in London with a straight-sets win over John McEnroe.
The record-holding 14-time Grand Slam champion turned back the clock as he secured a 6-3 6-4 victory against his former USA Davis Cup team-mate.
Former British No 1 Greg Rusedski defeated Swede Stefan Edberg 10-6 in a champions tie-break to earn his second victory at the Royal Albert Hall.
McEnroe impresses Sampras
Pete Sampras was generous in victory as he hailed opponent John McEnroe after their BlackRock Masters clash at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Sampras beat his fellow American 6-3 6-4 on a "fun night of tennis".
Of McEnroe, he said: "To be 49 and to be able to serve and volley, and be effective and still have the hands and the movement, is incredible. Credit to him for keeping himself fit."
