British women go through

Britain's women players have enjoyed encouraging starts at the US Open.

Melanie South, Elena Baltacha and Katie O'Brien all made it into the second round of qualifying after respective victories over Alberta Brianti, Anna Korzeniak and Petra Martic.

South will now face France's Youlia Fedossova while Baltacha goes up against American Carly Gullickson. O'Brien is drawn against Alexa Glatch.

British interest ended

Josh Goodall's bid to qualify for the US Open is at an end after he was easily defeated in straight sets by Diego Hartfield of Argentina.

British No 3 Goodall lost 6-4 6-2, meaning Andy Murray will be Britain's only representative in the men's draw at Flushing Meadows.

Fellow Britons Alexander Slabinsky and Alex Bogdanovic had already exited in the first round of qualifying.

Mirza out of US Open

Sania Mirza has pulled out of next week's US Open with a wrist injury.

The Indian had surgery on her wrist earlier this year but the problem recurred at the Olympics, forcing the 21-year-old to confirm her withdrawal from the event at Flushing Meadows.

Mirza, who will be out for three weeks, said: "It's very disappointing for me to miss the US Open, I've always done well in this tournament."
