Vaughan, Collingwood and Hoggard are past their sell-by date. The selectors should pick the best five batsmen, four bowlers, an all-rounder and the best wicketkeeper. They should then pick their own captain. There are at least three candidates. One of those selected should certainly be Stuart Broad, who is a true prospect other teams - including Australia - would love to have. But I fear the worst. Central contracts have not worked. They have bred complacency. T Murphy, via e-mail

I'm sick of reading about the selection for the second Test and trying to make a scapegoat out of Darren Pattinson. It takes a team to win a Test - one player alone can't lose a Test. Maybe England should look for some consistency in the top order if they are serious about winning the series against South Africa. Cath, Manchester

I do hope England can bounce back from this debacle. Fingers crossed. Rob, Leicester

England can come back in the Test series provided the team is: Strauss, Cook, Vaughan, Pietersen, Bell, Prior, Flintoff, Broad, S Jones, Harmison, Panesar, with Anderson and Collingwood knocking on the door. Ryan, Milton Keynes

Yorkshire - devoid of skill and lacking pride. Pitiful. Vic, Ashington

Re: Darren, Bob. Dwain Chambers was caught, and admitting, taking performance-enhancing drugs in the full knowledge of the consequences. Christine Ohuruogu was convicted after forgetting to inform the AAB she had changed her arrangements for a given day so the testers who turned up without an appointment could not carry out the test. All tests she has taken have been clean. Of course she should go to the Olympics as she is a clean, hard-working athlete. Tony, Glemsford

What did Rob Key do wrong? He scored a double century at Lord's against the West Indies and gets dropped. Do you have to be useless to play for England? Merv Law, Wateringbury, Kent

Re: Tony. You make the case that Chambers and Ohuruogu are different but when Rio Ferdinand forgot his test and got a ban he was told he was lucky because if he had been an athlete and missed a test it would have been classed as failing a test. Paul, Hyde

Re: Tony. If Christine Ohuruogu took the Olympics seriously and didn't have anything to hide, then there is no way she would have "forgotten" to inform the authorities of her whereabouts when she missed her third test. She was aware of the serious ramifications of a third missed test. If the Olympics mean so much to her, she wouldn't have "forgotten". Darren, Wakefield

If England wanted a keeper who can bat and is consistent with the gloves, they should have kept Paul Nixon in after the World Cup. Jamie, Keighley

Has anyone else noticed that whenever there is a televised golf tournament there is always a moron, ALWAYS with an American accent, who yells "In the hole!" - not just when a golfer is putting but even if they are teeing off at a par five hole! Harvey Schneiderman, Menston

I don't think anybody wants to make Darren Pattinson a scapegoat for England's latest debacle. It is the shambolic selection procedure which has once again made us a laughing stock.

On a positive note, I certainly agree with texters that if Simon Jones could return as the force he was before his injuries, this would be a tremendous boost - not that terrestrial television viewers would be able to see it! Tony, Colwyn Bay

So, Federer's lost again, in his first match since losing Wimbledon, and to a qualifier! Hate to say 'told you so'. Bring it on, Nadal, and claim that No 1 spot you so deserves. Linda, Stourbridge

Re: Linda If you want to have a go at Federer, at least get your facts right. Gilles Simon, who beat him, is hardly a "qualifier". He is no. 22 in the world and is the highest-ranked non-seed in the tournament. Iain, Edinburgh

We were informed that Federer would "sort the men from the boys" in Toronto. Nadal's winning Roland Garros, Queens, and Wimbledon back-to-back already sorted that. Anyone serious about the game should know the inevitable future for all champions. Better to retire with grace than to embarrassingly struggle to keep a slipping crown. I'm glad Nadal's thriving. Tennis needs more fit, entertaining, positive individuals like him. Eileen, Birmingham
