Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss put on an unbeaten 68 for England's first wicket in reply to New Zealand's 277 before bad light ended day two.
Ryan Sidebottom finished off the Kiwi innnings with 4-55 despite the resistance of Daniel Vettori (48).
Cook hit five boundaries as he cruised to 43no, and Strauss battled his way to an unbeaten 24 before the gloom halted proceedings for the final time.

Ryan Sidebottom was relieved after overcoming his first-day travails to lead the England attack with 4-55 against New Zealand at Lord's.
The Nottinghamshire left-armer took the four remaining Kiwi wickets as the visitors were dismissed for 277.
He told Sky Sports: "I was a bit disappointed with my bowling on the first day but being a bowler you have plenty of chances to put it right."
