Gerrard out to wow Fabio

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard is determined to prove to Fabio Capello that he is England's top midfielder.

And the Anfield skipper has pledged to bring his club form to the international arena if Capello sticks by him in the World Cup qualifiers.

Gerrard said: "He's prepared to help me - that's what I want. I haven't always hit my Liverpool form for England but it's not through a lack of trying."

Upson sympathy for Terry

Matthew Upson feels John Terry's combative style of defending is contributing to his list of injuries.

Terry has been ruled out of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Belarus with a back injury, joining Ashley Cole and Robert Green on the sidelines.

Upson said: "Injuries are a hazard of the position. You have to put your body on the line as a defender and John does that every week." Jermain Defoe insists

Defoe: No complacency

Jermain Defoe says England will not be guilty of complacency when they aim to carve out a small slice of history against Belarus on Wednesday evening.

England are bidding to register their best ever start to a World Cup qualifying campaign by chalking up a fourth successive win.

Defoe said: "We won't underestimate them, but if we work hard and pass the ball like we can do we should win."

Capello denies claim

Fabio Capello has distanced himself from the FA's demand that England's proposed friendly against Spain should be played away from Madrid's Bernabeu.

The ex-Real Madrid boss was upset by FA communications director Adrian Bevington saying: "The FA, with Fabio, were clear we wouldn't play in Madrid".

Capello told Marca: "It's a mistake by (Bevington). Why would I not want to play in the Bernabeu? It's my home."
