Ronaldo backs Blatter

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has backed Fifa president Sepp Blatter's condemnation of "modern slavery" in the game.

Blatter's words have been met with criticism in some areas but Ronaldo supports the Swiss's call.

Ronaldo told Portuguese channel TVI: "What Blatter said is right," before adding, "I do not know where I will begin next season."

Hooker cited for gouging

South Africa's 30-28 victory over New Zealand could come at a cost after hooker Bismarck du Plessis was cited.

The Springboks chalked up their first victory at Carisbrook and ended their decade-long winless streak on New Zealand soil with an impressive show.

But Du Plessis was cited for alleged eye gouging on All Blacks flanker Adam Thomson in the 11th minute of the Tri-Nations encounter in Dunedin.

Smit 'played vital role'

The South Africa team hailed the influence of John Smit after their historic 30-28 win over New Zealand.

A late Ricky Januarie try and a conversion by Francois Steyn got the Springboks home in a thrilling game.

Of injured skipper Smit, stand-in captain Victor Matfield said: "He helped us put a lot of things in place in the last four or five weeks and that's what carried us through."

Revenge for de Villiers

South Africa centre Jean de Villiers revealed his side were determined to beat New Zealand to banish memories of their defeat three years ago.

The world champions won 30-28 for their first win in New Zealand in a decade, having lost 31-27 at the same ground in 2005 after relinquishing a lead.

He told Sky Sports: "The guys have been working very hard on what we did wrong to get it right this week."

So'oialo rues tactics

New Zealand skipper Rodney So'oialo admitted his side had made tactical mistakes during their loss to South Africa in the Tri-Nations.

The All Blacks went down 30-28 after Enrico Januarie's 75th-minute score, converted by Francois Steyn, gave the world champion Springboks victory.

So'oialo told Sky Sports: "It was about territory. We played at the wrong side of the field and got punished."
