Murphy and Flannery back

Ireland have recalled Geordan Murphy and Jerry Flannery for Saturday's crucial showdown with Argentina.

Murphy returns at full-back with Girvan Dempsey dropping out of the squad altogether following Saturday's 22-3 defeat by New Zealand at Croke Park.

Flannery starts at hooker, replacing Rory Best, who drops to the bench, and the final change sees Stephen Ferris come in for Alan Quinlan at No 6.

Quinlan out of Pumas game

Ireland flanker Alan Quinlan has been ruled out of Saturday's clash with Argentina after receiving a three-week ban for stamping.

Quinlan will be available from December 7 after a disciplinary hearing held in Dublin decided the offence should have been punished with a red card.

The Munster back row was cited for a stamp on All Black No 8 Rodney So'oialo in last Saturday's 22-3 loss.

Rankings spur on Irish

Ireland coach Declan Kidney admits the chase for world-ranking points has added a fresh dimension to Saturday's clash with Argentina at Croke Park.

The standings show the Irish must prevail if they are to avoid another 'group of death' at the World Cup.

He said: "Both teams have something to play for in terms of the world rankings and I think that it gives this game even more of a competitive edge."
