Swindon and Somerset could get new universities after a list of 27 areas showing an interest in a Government funding scheme was revealed.

The two areas have added their names to the New University Challenge list and are in the running for funding.

Skills Secretary John Denham said 20 new universities could be funded under the programme over the next six years.
