Astarador (10/11 favourite) stole around 7l in a bad start to the 2m novices' chase and he made all to score a 9l success over The Duke's Speech.
Trainer Howard Johnson's assistant Ray Hawkey said: "If you had seen him when he shattered a fetlock at Haydock two seasons ago, you would not have thought he would have come back.
"We thought he was going to be good before that and he might still be."
