Phoenix Tower retired

Phoenix Tower has been ruled out of Saturday's Emirates Airline Champion Stakes and will now head to stud.

Connections were hoping the 4yo would end a run of four seconds in Group 1 company at the weekend, but after banging a tendon, he has been retired.

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, told PA Sport: "Scans showed a small tear in the tendon which was an unacceptable risk."

Tower team disappointed

Connections of Phoenix Tower could not hide their disappointment after a tendon injury ended his career.

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, said: "Obviously it is disappointing as we were really looking forward to the weekend.

"He was in good form and it is a shame as if ever a horse deserved to win a Group 1, it was him. We'll have a chat about where he will stand at stud."

Over in Champion list

Although Phoenix Tower will miss out, Cecil could still be represented in the Champion Stakes by Twice Over, who featured among the 12 confirmations.

Derby hero New Approach is still among the possibles, while Hebridean is the sole entry for Aidan O'Brien.

Dermot Weld's Famous Name completes a three-strong Irish challenge, while Full Of Gold and Russian Cross could make the trip from France.
