Cox duo in Newton hunt

Clive Cox is double-handed with Dansili Dancer and Red Merlin in the bet365 Old Newton Cup at Haydock today.

The former won the race in 2007, while Red Merlin is seeking a hat-trick after wins at Chester and Goodwood.

Cox said: "Red Merlin has done well and is up in the handicap, but things need to go right for him. Dansili Dancer won this a couple of years back and I'm delighted he's here taking his chance."

Cumani: Fal can bounce back

Luca Cumani is keeping his fingers crossed everything falls right for Falcativ when he contests the bet365 Old Newton Cup at Haydock.

Cumani said: "It's a bit of a lottery, with so many runners, but if things go right for him he might have a chance.

"There were a couple of things that didn't go right for him at Doncaster (beaten favourite) as there was no pace and he started pulling a little bit."

Hatton recovery

Hatton Flight unseated his rider soon after leaving the stalls in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot but is in good form for the Old Newton Cup.

Trainer Andrew Balding said: "Obviously it was a concern at Ascot but he has put all of his weight back on and seems in good form.

"He was progressive before Ascot, but the draw would be a worry. He's drawn 17 of 17 and needs luck from there."

Mac needs rain

George Moore is hoping Macorville can finally make his return from a lengthy absence in Haydock's Old Newton Cup, but would like the ground softer.

Moore said: "I would like to see them have a bit more rain and if the ground wasn't right, he wouldn't run.

"He just knocked himself a while ago but he has been ready to run since March. We have taken him to the races a few times but he's just been unlucky."
