Merlin works magic

Red Merlin produced a strong late surge to get on top of Munsef and land the Old Newton Cup at Haydock.

Clive Cox's charge was sent off the 15/2 joint-favourite for the competitive handicap, and travelled sweetly for Philip Robinson.

Munsef nosed in front at the 1f pole, but Red Merlin's finish was too strong and he got up to win by ½l, with 5l back to Mezzanisi in third.

Cox lifts another Cup

Clive Cox followed up Dansili Dancer's Old Newton Cup success of two years ago courtesy of Red Merlin.

The trainer said: "I am pleased we gave Royal Ascot a miss and came here with Red Merlin. It is nice to win it again.

"He was a bit tight in his muscles after Goodwood so we waited for this and Philip gave him a great ride. The better the race, the better the pace, which suits him as he can be keen."
