Mick set for Newburgh

The creation of the Newburgh Handicap at Newbury has come to the rescue of George Margarson, who had targeted the Ebor all year with Young Mick.

The 6yo finished second to Mad Rush at Haydock and filled the same place at Ascot when unlucky in running.

Margarson said: "It's a shame about York but they've done well to get a good race like this on. The horse is in top form so we'll see how he goes."

Cumani relies on Bauer

Luca Cumani was due to be represented in the Ebor by Mad Rush, but his sole representative in the Newburgh Handicap will be Goodwood second Bauer.

The Italian handler said: "Bauer is very well, he ran a good race at Goodwood and he's in very good form.

"We are just hoping that there is no more rain, because if the ground was to soften then we would have to reassess the situation."

Formax on right track

Marcus Tregoning is hopeful of a good run from bottom-weight Formax in the Newburgh Handicap at Newbury.

The trainer said: "He seems to like it best at Goodwood as he's run his best races there but he ran very well at Ascot going the wrong way round last time. The ground is perfect.

"Richard Mullen has ridden him before and gets on well with him and hopefully he'll run very well."

Yellow has weighty task

Yellowstone, a Group 3 winner for Aidan O'Brien last season, shoulders top weight in the Newburgh Handicap after winning a York Listed event last time.

He is now trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam, who said: "He's got top weight and it will be hard but he's in good form.

"It's nice that the race is on the doorstep to Lambourn and we don't have to do any more travelling. It will be a slog but he's top weight for a reason."

Tough task for Noverre

Richard Fahey believes Master Noverre will have to raise his game to land the rescheduled Gimcrack Stakes at Newbury.

The trainer believes his unbeaten 2yo would have had a better chance if the race had been run at York, where only five runners had been declared.

Fahey said: "He's in very good order and I'm very happy with him but he needs to step up. I don't know how well he will get 6f but we'll find out."

Marine set for battle

Tom Dascombe is hoping that Marine Boy can record a second course and distance win in the Gimcrack Stakes, now at Newbury after York's abandonment.

The trainer said: "He's a course and distance winner, a good to soft surface should be perfect for him and we're hopeful of a good run.

"Obviously it's not helpful that we had to go to York and back but that's nobody's fault, these things happen."

Smart double-handed

Bryan Smart is double-handed in the Gimcrack Stakes with Able Master and Spin Cycle, although he admits both horses would prefer quicker ground.

Able Master was third in Listed company at Epsom on Derby day, while Spin Cycle was fifth in the Molecomb Stakes.

Smart said: "Both horses are in good form and I am looking forward to seeing how they perform. We have a worry with the ground but what can you do?"
