South Africa urges caution

South African president Thabo Mbeki has rejected calls for international intervention in crisis-hit Zimbabwe.

Arriving in Watford for the Progressive Governance Conference of centre-left leaders, Mr Mbeki said he believed the current situation was "manageable".

Zimbabwe's MDC opposition party has urged the United Nations to intervene to avoid bloodshed as the country prepares for a presidential run-off.

No sympathy for train robber
DR (2/7) misses the point. The sentences given to the Great Train Robbers reflected the seriousness with which society then viewed the crime and the comparison with sentences today is irrelevant. This was, after all, robbery with violence.
