US bank protection expanded

The US government will buy stocks in banks in a bid to return the nation's economy to the "path of growth and prosperity", George Bush has said.

The president described the flexible rescue plan worth up to $250bn as aimed at the "root cause" of the problems.

He also issued a temporary guarantee of "most new debt issued by insured banks" and expanded government insurance to cover most small business accounts.
