Focus: Low-key royals

The marriage of Peter Phillips and his Canadian bride Autumn Kelly is attracting attention around the world.

It is a stark change for the royal newlyweds, both 30, who have resolutely kept out of the limelight since meeting at the 2003 Montreal Grand Prix.

At that time, the Queen's eldest grandchild, was working for Formula One team BMW Williams and Miss Kelly was employed in the BMW hospitality suite.

Peter invited Autumn to a post-race party and, on his return to England, they kept in touch on e-mail and phone.

But so determined was Peter to get to know his girlfriend on his own terms that he did not immediately tell her he was 11th in line to the British throne.

Miss Kelly only discovered her husband-to-be's royal connections when she spotted him in a programme about Prince William ahead of his 21st birthday.

For two years the couple have lived in a west London flat, spending weekends at a cottage on the Gloucs estate of Peter's father, Captain Mark Phillips.

Peter graduated from the University of Exeter with a degree in sports science and now looks after the Royal Bank of Scotland's motor racing sponsorship.

His fiancee, a graduate of Canada's McGill University, is PA to veteran broadcaster Sir Michael Parkinson.

Their engagement was announced in a simple statement released by Buckingham Palace last July.

Peter, a self-confessed "old romantic", has described how he proposed to his girlfriend as they walked the dog during a rain shower.

High winds and bad weather had forced him to abandon his original plan to pop the question during a romantic balloon ride.

Miss Kelly said of Peter's unexpected proposal: "He went down on one knee in the downpour and produced a ring from his pocket."

The Canadian added: "I certainly didn't see his question coming on this particular day. I said 'Yes' straight away."

The couple hope to live abroad for a few years after their marriage before settling down and having children.

Ahead of their wedding, Miss Kelly has given up her Catholic faith, and been "welcomed" into the Church of England.

If she had not changed churches, it would have meant Peter giving up his place in the succession.

Under a 1701 Act, heirs to the throne who marry Catholics cannot become sovereigns. Peter said he "loves" the freedom from scrutiny he enjoys but is "proud" to be part of the Royal Family.
