Jobless total rises to 1.79m
The unemployment total has increased by 164,000 to its worst level since 1999, according to new figures.
A total of 1.79 million people were out of work in the quarter to August. The rate of increase was the highest since 1991 when it jumped by 186,000.
PM Gordon Brown said: "Unemployment is something we wish to avoid wherever possible and we will help people move into jobs when vacancies exist."
