Jersey officer speaks out

The policeman in charge of the Jersey child abuse inquiry said criticism of his investigation was a bid to protect the island's "bucket and spade image".

The inquiry, led by Deputy Police Chief Lenny Harper, was attacked this week by his successor, David Warcup, who said there were no suspicious child deaths.

But Mr Harper said: "I firmly believe they were trying to play down years of historic abuse to protect the island."

Re J C (01/07) and five-year licences for teachers. Why is it that attempts to improve the education system always highlight teachers as the problem, whereas in the NHS doctors and nurses are not seen as the problem but as the answer?
