Meningitis C "superbugs" that are impervious to vaccines could pose a new threat to children, research claimed.

Scientists at Imperial College London have identified three strains of the bacteria with heightened resistance to vaccine-triggered immune responses.

There are no vaccine-resistant strains yet in the community, but a simple alteration in DNA could give the bug the potential to avoid antibodies.
