EU leaders in banks pledge

Countries that use the euro will temporarily guarantee bank refinancing to ease the credit crunch, French president Nicolas Sarkozy has said.

Mr Sarkozy said the measure taken by the leaders of the 15-nation "Eurozone" is "not a gift to banks".

The pledge was made at an emergency summit in Paris, after PM Gordon Brown had urged EU leaders to use the UK's bank bail-out deal as a framework.
