A woman from Northern Ireland who contracted rabies while abroad has died in hospital in Belfast.

Lisa McMurray is believed to have contracted the virus when she was bitten by a dog while in Africa and has been critically ill since last month.

She worked at an animal sanctuary in South Africa in December 2006, during which time she was bitten, and returned there briefly last March.
