Public confidence in the immigration system is being undermined by the use of appeals and legal challenges to asylum rulings, a minister has warned.

Immigration minister Phil Woolas said he stands by a claim in an interview that some lawyers and NGOs are "playing the system to the nth degree".

He said there is an "industry" in challenging asylum rulings, making it difficult to offer asylum to refugees.
