TOURING CARS: Plato eyes win laurels

Two more wins at Silverstone on Sunday will see Jason Plato match his previous best of nine victories in a season.

The Seat driver is a distant second in the standings to Fabrizio Giovanardi but has an unrivalled seven wins, and with six races still to go could yet match Swiss Alain Menu's record of 12.

Oxford's Plato said: "I'm just focusing on wins. Silverstone should suit the turbo-diesel engine in our Leon TDI."

Safety first Gio policy

Fabrizio Giovanardi can put the British Championship title beyond reach at Silverstone on Sunday but his chief aim will be simply to consolidate his lead.

Vauxhall's Italian driver is 41 points clear of Seat's Jason Plato with just Silverstone and Brands Hatch to go.

Giovanardi said: "Of course I want to win but it will be tough as my car has maximum ballast. Maintaining my advantage is wiser and more important."

Turner focused on fun

Seat driver Darren Turner expects Silverstone to provide exciting racing this weekend as he targets a top-three finish in the Championship.

Turner, who won the final race at the previous round in Knockhill, sits eighth in the standings, 41 points behind third-placed Colin Turkington.

He said: "Silverstone's a lot of fun. We lap in just over a minute and all the cars run close together all race."

Bell ready to get tough

Martyn Bell will try a new approach for Sunday's penultimate round of the British Championship at Silverstone.

The Vauxhall-powered Barrow-upon-Humber driver is keen to do well because many of his sponsors will be watching.

Bell said: "We are talking about next year and I want to be here again, so it's time for me to go for it. I've been told to be more aggressive in my driving, and that's what I plan to do."
