Van de Velde back in Open

Jean Van de Velde will be back at the Open after a final-hole birdie earned him a place at Royal Birkdale.

The 42-year-old, forever remembered for his last-hole triple bogey seven at Carnoustie in 1999, survived a 36-hole final qualifying at Hillside with a one-under-par 143.

The other qualifiers from the 96-strong field were winner Jamie Elson, and amateurs Chris Woods and Rohan Blizard.

Jean's Open relief

Jean Van de Velde admitted his relief after qualifying for next week's Open with a last-hole birdie.

The Frenchman carded a one-under 143 to tie for equal second in the 36-hole final qualifying at Hillside and secure his place at Royal Birkdale.

He said: "There are only two tournaments a year I want to play in - the French Open and the Open. It means a lot to be playing in it again."

Rose revved up for Open

Justin Rose will revisit the scene of one of the most thrilling Open performances next week determined to leave his "cold putter down south".

Rose was joint fourth as an amateur at Royal Birkdale 10 years ago, but has been struggling on the greens recently.

He told his website: "I'm just going to be fine-tuning the game at home and really just getting fired up for the biggest event in golf."
