McIlroy blows opportunity

Teenager Rory McIlroy threw away the chance to become the third youngest European Tour winner after a play-off defeat by Jean-Francois Lucquin.

The 19-year-old from Northern Ireland went from four ahead to one behind early on, but led by one at the 18th only to miss a five-feet par putt.

McIlroy two-putted at the second extra hole, but it made no difference as Lucquin holed from 12 feet for birdie.

McIlroy: C'est la vie

Rory McIlroy attempted to put a brave face on his disappointment after throwing away a clear chance of victory at the Omega European Masters.

The Northern Ireland teenager missed a five-foot putt at the 72nd hole and an even shorter effort in a play-off as Jean-Francois Lucquin took the title.

McIlroy said: "I played very well all week but unfortunately one bad shot cost me. C'est la vie."

Lucquin in dreamland

Frenchman Jean-Francois Lucquin admitted his first European Tour victory at the European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre felt "like a dream".

Lucquin capitalised on Rory McIlroy's missed putt at the last hole to end his worries over retaining his Tour card.

He said: "I have no words to explain what I am feeling. When I saw my wife and little boy (on the final green) it was like a dream."

Re: Darren, Lurgan. Celtic and Rangers attract "big" names like Dailly, Lennon, Weir, Hartson etc because they can offer Champions League football for one or two games. Without Europe they would plummet down the English leagues. They are best suited to their SPL where they can win games. Norm, Newcastle
