Ireland boost ranks

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has called up five more players ahead of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Cyprus.

Caleb Folan, Kevin Foley, Anthony Stokes, Keith Andrews and Darron Gibson have all been elevated to the squad.

The former Italy coach initially named a 21-man squad which did not include injured trio Steve Finnan, Stephen Kelly and Steven Reid.

Evans could be fit for NI

Defender Jonny Evans has returned to training with Northern Ireland, raising hopes he could face Slovenia in a World Cup qualifier in Maribor on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Manchester United player is on the mend after being hit by a virus earlier in the week.

Boss Nigel Worthington said: "We will assess him over the next 24 hours and see where he is at. He has had a rough week. He was very poorly on Tuesday."

Bellamy: No retirement

Wales skipper Craig Bellamy has vowed that he will not quit international football, despite a year of injuries.

The striker has endured several setbacks but will start his first competitive international for a year against Liechtenstein in Cardiff.

Bellamy said: "International football will give me up before I quit international football. I've missed too many games to want to pack it in."

Toshack: We can qualify

Wales boss John Toshack insists the nation's fans and players must "keep believing" they can qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

Toshack's team take on Liechtenstein in Cardiff knowing three points are important against lesser teams having already lost to Russia in Moscow.

He said: "Of course it is going to be hard to qualify from this group, that is why we must beat Liechtenstein."

Burley puts Scots first

George Burley insists moving Scotland a step closer to the World Cup finals is his motivation for beating Norway at Hampden - not saving his own job.

Burley has been given assurances by SFA chief executive Gordon Smith that his position will be unaffected by Saturday's World Cup qualifier.

However Burley said: "It's not about me, it's about Scotland. I took this job to try to take my country forward."
