England player ratings

DAVID JAMES: A couple of early wobbles but could do nothing for the goal and had little else to do. 5/10

WES BROWN: Will have to do more to convince at international level. Ducked when the cross came in for Belarus's goal and looked vulnerable at times. 5

RIO FERDINAND: A solid performance by England's stand-in captain. Always first to the ball and commanded the back four well. 7

MATTHEW UPSON: Very nervous display. Often late in the tackle and looked uncomfortable on the ball. 5

WAYNE BRIDGE: Caught cold at the back for the first goal and seemed reluctant to go forward in the first half. He improved but needs more games. 5

GARETH BARRY: Struggled to take control in the first half but seemed more assured in the second period in his more defensive role. 6

STEVEN GERRARD: His top-drawer opener was the kind of goal we are used to seeing him score at Liverpool. Was unlucky not to get a second late on. 8

FRANK LAMPARD: Efficient in midfield without being outstanding. 6

THEO WALCOTT: Over-used in the first half owing to lack of width down the left. Threatened at times but was poor when tracking back. Could have done more to prevent Belarus's goal. 6

WAYNE ROONEY: One of his best displays in an England shirt. A cool finish gave England their second. His finish for England's third was world class. 9

EMILE HESKEY: A trademark Heskey performance. Won almost every header and held the ball up superbly. 8

Substitutes:
SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS (for Walcott 67): Made a few impressive runs down the flank after coming on. 6

Substitutes: PETER CROUCH (for Heskey 69): Took on Heskey's role well in his short time on the pitch. 6

DAVID BECKHAM (for Rooney, 87): Given little time to impress but earned his 107th cap to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton in the all-time list. 6
