Downing requests move
Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing has handed in a transfer request.
Boro chairman Steve Gibson had insisted the 24-year-old would not be sold in the wake of an approach from Tottenham, but the England international has taken matters into his own hands.
Downing signed a new five-year contract at the Riverside Stadium in February last year, but has grown increasingly restless at the club.
Dad: Stewart has to move
Stewart Downing's father feels his son has to leave Middlesbrough if he wants to fulfil his ambitions.
The 24-year-old winger has handed in a transfer request, with Tottenham stepping up their long-held interest in the England international.
Downing Sr told the Evening Gazette: "He was assured there would be investment in the squad. He feels the club haven't matched his expectations."
