Pogatetz talks under way

Middlesbrough defender Emanuel Pogatetz has opened talks with the Teesside club regarding a contract extension.

Although the Austria international, 25, has another two years remaining on his present deal, both Boro and the player are eager to cement their relationship.

Pogatetz told the Evening Gazette: "I think we will reach an agreement. I don't know when but it looks very good. There's no pressure."

Johnson may go to Ibrox

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has revealed he may be willing to let Adam Johnson join Rangers on loan.

The winger, 21, has been linked with the Ibrox club as Gers boss Walter Smith bids to strengthen his squad.

Southgate told the Scottish Sun: "We have not had any contact yet from Rangers but (coach) Iain Durrant is out here in Faro (for the Algarve Cup), so maybe we can have a chat over a beer."

M'brough 0 V Guimaraes 1

Middlesbrough were undone by another late goal as they went down 1-0 to Vitoria Guimaraes in their second and final match of the Algarve Cup.

Boro, who conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to Celtic in their tournament opener on Tuesday night, were the better side but lost to a brilliant free-kick from substitute Dinis.

Joe Ledley gave Cardiff a 1-0 win over Celtic in the night's other game.
