Boro 'no' to Downing

Middlesbrough have rejected a transfer request from winger Stewart Downing.

The 24-year-old submitted a written transfer request first thing on Monday morning in the wake of an improved offer from long-time suitors Tottenham.

Chief executive Keith Lamb said: "It was considered before being rejected. Prior to this, we received an improved offer from Tottenham. We rejected this and informed them he is not for sale."

Dad: Stewart has to move

Stewart Downing's father feels his son has to leave Middlesbrough if he wants to fulfil his ambitions.

The 24-year-old winger, subject of an approach from Premier League rivals Tottenham, has had his transfer request rejected by Middlesbrough.

Downing Sr told the Evening Gazette: "He was assured there would be investment in the squad. He feels the club haven't matched his expectations."

It looks like my club Villa are going to buy another load of rubbish in Downing. Come On Martin, buy some players with real class, or it's the bottom six for us next season.
