Exodus of funds fear
The PM's emergency financial committee is meeting amid fears of an exodus of funds from UK banks to foreign rivals which enjoy 100% state protection.
Chancellor Alistair Darling is also to brief the Commons on the credit crunch as MPs return after the summer break.
City observers also expect the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee to slice a quarter or half a percentage point off the 5% base rate on Thursday.
