New car sales tumble 21%
The number of new cars sold last month plunged by 21.2% on a year earlier as cash-strapped consumers stayed away from showrooms amid the economic gloom.
Sales in September dived to 330,295 despite the introduction of new number plates last month..
Trade organisation The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said demand for new cars has now fallen for the fifth consecutive month.
