1m job seekers 'by 2009'
The numbers of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance rose 31,800 in September to 939,900, according to Office for National Statistics data.
But Vicky Redwood, of Capital Economics, said at this rate the number of people claiming the allowance will top a million by the end of 2008.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "This is bad news, and figures do not even show the bank crash effects."
