Barclays shares rally
Shares in Barclays, which have plunged by about 50% over the past year, rose 6p to 375p after its half-year results matched expectations in the City.
The figures come after Barclays boosted its balance sheet by £4.5bn last month, with wealthy foreign investors taking up most of the new rights issue shares.
The firm also sold its life insurance business this week to European company Swiss Re to bolster its finances.
