Shares plummet in London
Leading shares on the London stock market have plummeted almost 9% as fears over a global recession sparked huge falls on international exchanges.
The FTSE 100 Index plunged 381.74 to 3932.06, its first close below the 4,000 barrier since 2003, while stocks in Europe and Asia also tumbled.
In the US, the Dow Jones, which fell below 9,000 on Thursday, sank further to end the week down 1.49% on 8,451.49.
