Darling considers options
Chancellor Alistair Darling, reportedly considering moves to protect banks with taxpayers' cash, did little to restore confidence with firm commitments.
He said "all practical options must remain open" for dealing with the crisis, but said a running commentary on plans would be "irresponsible".
The weekend saw European governments rush to support failing banks hit by lack of funds.
