Britannia merger talks

Britannia Building Society has confirmed it is in talks which may result in a merger with Co-Operative Financial Services.

A tie-up would form a business with six million customers and £70bn of assets, although both sides stressed discussions are at an early stage.

Legal changes due to come into force by the end of the year will make it easier for different mutuals to join forces.
