Confidence at new low

Consumer confidence slumped to a new record low in June as a run of grim data increased fears over the health of the UK economy, Nationwide has said.

Ongoing economic uncertainty, a weaker housing market and higher food and fuel costs all combined to make consumers feel increasingly negative.

The lender's consumer confidence index dropped to 61, down from 65 in May and 93 in June last year.
