Simon Pegg has acknowledged fans' hostility to his casting as Scotty in the new Star Trek movie.

Trekkies believe he will ruin the role with his humour and will never measure up to the late James Doohan.

He says: "I am not surprised by their reaction. I think that's because they immediately thought I was there to undermine the franchise... but that's not what it's about at all."
