Limahl's Neverending haircut
The 1985 fantasy film The Neverending Story had a hit theme song sung by Limahl - as a new DVD of the movie out soon reminds us, writes Mike Martin.
The singer, now 49, says: "There are certain films that have a very catchy song, and ours was one of those.
"Everybody remembers the song and can sing the line "Neverending Story", so I think the song was a big part in the film's great success."
The Neverending Story holds up as a film 23 years after its release - and not just because of the catchy theme song, says singer Limahl.
The lead singer of reformed band Kajagoogoo, who recorded the Giorgio Moroder song for the film says: "You can throw lots of money at a film and have a big production - but no story.
"You have to grab people with a story and this film does that, I think."
The song for The Neverending Story was recorded with uber-producer Moroder's factory gloss but Limahl almost blew his chance.
He explains: "I arrived at Giorgio's factory in Munich, and in those days I liked a drink and a party.
"I had been up late the night before, and I smoked in those days. So when I recorded the song I couldn't reach the high notes. I had to do it again."
Limahl says a high-tech Moroder theme song doesn't always lead to a hit movie like The Neverending Story.
"He did the song for Electric Dreams, which was a hit song but the film wasn't, because it was not great," says the singer.
"Neverending Story was - and still is - a sweet story, and that's why it stands up and people will still go back to it now on DVD."
Although Limahl is promising a comeback with Kajagoogoo he's not sure about one thing - his hairstyle.
Now sporting a spiky bob cut - still with blond streaks - he laughed: "I see a mullet on young people and think it looks really great.
"But now I'm older I'm not sure I can get away with it. I wear a wig on stage to take the mickey anyway." The Neverending Story DVD is out on Aug 18.
