Mirror, mirror on the silver screen ...

Movie mirrors are not just reflective. They can be doorways, barriers, death instruments, or dispensers of magic or illusion, writes Victor Olliver.

In the Kiefer Sutherland-starring Mirrors (just out), an evil force uses mirrors as a gateway into the home of an ex-cop and his family.

Mirrors can dissemble or tell you the terrible truth ... here's 10 great films in which mirrors play a part.

Superman II (1980) the Man of Steel has his hands full with a trio of super-powered villains who escape from their Phantom Zone prison - the weird flying diamond-shaped mirror that scooped them up from the planet Krypton.

What Lies Beneath (2000) A woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) starts seeing ghostly images in a bathroom mirror. Is this a spook or psychological movie? She also sees the face of a spectral young woman reflected in water.

Candyman (1992) Clive Barker's horror tale in which if you say "Candyman" five times into a mirror, you invoke a terrible murdering beast (the vengeful son of a murdered slave). Sceptics of the "legend" soon fall victim.

The Man With The Golden Gun (1974) In the final shoot-out with Scaramanga, Bond is led into the villain's Hall of Mirrors. Images of Scaramanga mislead 007 but he gets his man when he works out the location of his enemy.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone (2001) The Mirror of Erised (Desire, reversed) promises: "I show not your face but your heart's desire". Harry Potter longs for his family but as Dumbledore cautions: "It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live." The mirror could hold him in the past.

Gigli (2003) and Saturday Night Fever (1977) Both have scenes where our heroes "love" themselves in a mirror scene. Always a mark of foolish vanity.

The Shining (1980) The boy Danny filmed in a mirror talking to ghostly Tony - Tony's trying to warn him about the horrors at the Overlook Hotel.

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (1937) "Mirror, mirror on the wall ..."

Scarface (1983) The Babylon Club has wraparound mirrors, reflective of crime's unlimited fantasy. In the shoot-out the glass shatters adding a broken dream detail to the horror.
