Borthwick named captain

Martin Johnson has named Bath lock Steve Borthwick as England captain for the tour of New Zealand in his first squad as team manager.

Saracens-bound forward Borthwick has been chosen in the absence of World Cup and Six Nations captain Phil Vickery.

Johnson has picked six uncapped players in the 32-man squad and they are Topsy Ojo, Danny Care, David Paice, Jason Hobson, Nick Kennedy and Dylan Hartley.

Johnno backs Borthwick

New England boss Martin Johnson claims Steve Borthwick was the "obvious" choice to captain the side on this summer's New Zealand tour.

Borthwick was named skipper for the two Tests against the All Blacks next month with Phil Vickery out due to injury.

Johnson, the recently-appointed team manager, said: "Steve was the obvious choice. He is very well respected among the squad and a very good leader."

Johnson: Phil needs rest

England team manager Martin Johnson believes it is the right decision to leave Phil Vickery out of the squad to tour New Zealand in the summer.

Vickery could return from injury if Wasps secure a place in the Guinness Premiership final.

But Johnson said: "Phil is trying hard to play again this season but we felt it wasn't the right call to go on an arduous tour."
