Michael Owen is determined to prove his critics wrong after completing his shock move to Manchester United.

Doubts have been expressed about the wisdom of manager Sir Alex Ferguson signing the injury-plagued striker.

Owen said: "I'm not silly, I know there will be some people saying maybe the manager shouldn't have signed me. As soon as the first game kicks off, I can do my talking on the pitch."

Owen eyes trophies

Manchester United new-boy Michael Owen hopes to add to his trophy collection during his time at Old Trafford.

The former England striker has not won any silverware since he lifted the League Cup with Liverpool in 2003.

He said: "They are a fantastic team with fantastic players, that's why they've all won so much. Hopefully I can jump on the bandwagon, score a few goals, and help us to further success."

Massacci claims United deal

Empoli youngster Alberto Massacci claims he has signed for Premier League champions Manchester United.

The 16-year-old right-back has never figured in the first-team squad of the Serie B side but impressed United's scouts during an international event.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport: "In life a chance like this only comes past you once, and you've got to grab it. I don't want to have regrets."
